Cooking a Tip Turkey
When people think of turkey, the usual thing that comes to mind is thanksgiving. But this dish can be served at any time. All the person has to do is buy this huge thing from the grocery then cook it.
Turkeys come in different sizes. To avoid any spoilage, the person has to think carefully how many people will be coming so the right size can be purchased.
Turkeys in the supermarket are wrapped in plastic and still have giblets, which are stuffed in or around the neck. After removing it, the bird should be washed thoroughly using cold water both inside and out to make sure it is clean.
The seasoning is the thing that adds flavor to the turkey. Before rubbing it in, one should make sure all the water that was used earlier has been completely drained.
There are two ways to cook a turkey. The first is simply seasoning it and putting it in the oven. The second is stuffing it with breads, butter or parley. Should the person choose to stuff the animal, this should be cooked in a pan then just inserted later.
Some people like the skin on the turkey to be crispy. Those who prefer it that way should take the turkey out and place the legs on a frying pan until the skin turns gold. The individual should make sure this is big enough because it is quite hard to hold it until this happens.
Either way, the oven should be heated to 325 degrees. This will warm it up for faster cooking of the turkey. There used to be a conventional time frame as to how long a turkey should be cooked. This has already changed because breeders focus now more on the white meat and the weight of the bird.
Just to give the person an idea, anything that is below 12 pounds should be cooked in the oven for at least two to three hours. Those that are in between 12 to 16 pounds should be given at least three to three and a half. Turkeys that are heavier than that should be cooked for about four to five.
Ideally the turkey should reach a temperature of about 180 degrees before it can be taken out of the oven. It is important to use a meat thermometer and not the pop up version because it is not able to get an accurate reading when this is placed on the bird.
Some people ask which part of the turkey should be placed first into the oven. There are no rules for this because whether it is placed breast down or up, chefs have observed that it does not make any difference.
The turkey should not be covered when it is in the oven. This is because everyone would love to see this in a nice brownish color when it is being served. This should only done if the color in the outside changed too quickly knowing full well that it is not yet time to bring it out. Some aluminum foil can be used so the bird will have an equal color all around it.
The big bird known as the turkey sure is a marvelous treat. The people who are coming should get that appetite ready and after saying grace should just dig in.
